Going Tiny- Adding to my Cthulhu Mythos Figures Series

I was making figures about 8 inches or larger, but I made this teeny little green guy, Lothor. I think he's so cute. I thought I'd make a Nyarlathotep, or a Stalker Among the Stars.....which is a nice name for a monster who is supposed to make men mad.

But, I found these skull beads and my tiny monsters stood by patiently as I created my decorator Cthulhu Chas. The idea of this giant monster decorating his lair amused me.

Adding new things

Okay, I've been busy creating armatures so in the next few days you're going to see some cthulhu
babies, some hex cats, a couple of Chihuahuas and a crawling eye or 2.

If you want a special custom item, you'd better hit my shop this week or I'll never get it done and shipped for the holiday.

I'm really pleased with Bitsy thulu. I like her little silk flowers. I'm working on a baby Nyarlathotep too. Stop on by to see the new magic animals and cthulhu monsters I'll be adding. See you on the "Dark" Side... :)

Happy Solstice! Christmas....etc ! Be happy!

Cthulhu HP Lovecraft and Traveling

The atmosphere of Lovecraft's stories always managed to scare me as much as the monsters themselves. When I was looking for information on the areas of New England he was writing about I found this site Cthulhu Files http://cthulhufiles.com/ the most information on the stories, the characters and the areas in the stories.

There's a site that shows you a map of a walking tour of College Hill with all pertinent Lovecraftian places of interest. http://www.hplovecraft.com/creation/sites/walktour.asp

Donovan Loucks travelogue is very interesting.

Joseph Morales travelogue is my fave.

When I started this series of figures, I found this site to be a very valuable source of information. In fact if you search through the different articles, you could even plan a nice tour of Innsmouth or many of the other towns mentioned in the stories.
I definitely need to design a new monster....I'm thinking Shub-Niggurath or a Shantak Bird and maybe a vacation back East.

Creating Art based on your Fears-Big Dolls And Ventriloquist Dummies

Okay, I have this thing about big dolls.... That kissy doll is around 2 feet tall and when you pull her arms together with the palms touching she blows a kiss.

Now if the fact that old kissy was as big I was at age 3, the hissy popping sound of the kiss, surely scared me. I thought she had a snake inside her that I woke up when I moved her arms together.

The other doll- like creations I still get the creeps over are ventriloquist dummies.

My Mom used to make me watch scary movies with her when I was little. One that has always stayed with me was the 1964 Devil Doll.

This evil magician found a way to trap a victim's consciousness inside his ventriloquist dummy. He kept the poor dummy in a cage each night. So, we have the origins of my claustrophobia, the fear of being controlled by someone else, and the hatred of humanoid doll like things pretending to be something they're not....what a cornucopia of fears....

Now at age 49, I make art dolls for a living....go figure. I make Cthulhu monsters, ghosts, anthropomorphic figures, and all kinds of strange creatures.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm really overcoming my fears by making these sculptures or just feeding them.

But, I do think it is much more challenging to create something that you're not completely comfortable viewing when you're finished with it.
